Spring cleaning: make your own organic lavender multi-surface cleaner

Nettoyant multi-surfaces maison au lavandin bio

The fine weather is back, and with it that irresistible desire for renewal. Open the windows wide, let in the light, refresh every room in the house… Spring cleaning is a ritual that many people look forward to every year.

But have you ever taken a close look at the composition of your household products? Synthetic surfactants, artificial fragrances, endocrine disruptors… The products we use to clean our interior pollutes very often. Fortunately, there’s a simple, effective and fragrant alternative: organic lavender.

In this article, we’ll take you step-by-step through the process of making your own lavender multi-surface cleaner, using the dried flowers we’ve been growing on the Valensole plateau for four generations.

To find out everything you need to know about how to use lavender in your home, consult our complete guide: How to use lavender at home.

Why lavandin is the ideal ally for the natural household

While fine lavender is renowned for its gentle fragrance and cosmetic uses, lavandin is its cousin, perfectly suited for household maintenance. Richer in camphor, its fresh and powerful scent makes it a natural ally for cleaning:

  • A clean scent: its fresh and camphorated fragrance lingers on countertops, sinks, and bathroom surfaces.
  • An ally for damp rooms: it brings a fresh scent to bathrooms and kitchens.
  • A natural home fragrance: a few drops are enough to perfume a room with a fresh, Provençal scent.
  • Wardrobes: In Provence, it is traditionally placed among linens.

Unlike many commercial sprays, lavandin essential oil is a 100% natural, biodegradable ingredient cultivated without pesticides.

Recipe: your own organic lavender multi-surface cleaner

This recipe is simple, fast and requires only natural ingredients that you probably already have at home – except lavender, of course!

The ingredients

  • 500 ml lavandin hydrosol
  • 200 ml white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons dried organic lavandin flowers
  • 1 clean spray bottle (ideally glass)

Manufacturing stages

  1. Prepare the lavender infusion: heat 500 ml lavandin hydrosol (without boiling). Pour over the 2 tablespoons of dried lavandin flowers. Cover and leave to infuse for 30 minutes, then filter carefully through a coffee filter or fine cloth.
  2. Add the white vinegar: Once the infusion has cooled, pour it into your spray bottle and add the 200 ml of white vinegar. Vinegar naturally degreases and descales.
  3. Stir in the bicarbonate: add the tablespoon of baking soda. Note that the mixture will foam slightly – this is normal! Shake gently.
  4. All set! Spray onto surfaces (worktops, sinks, hobs, tiles, taps) and wipe off with a clean cloth or sponge. No rinsing necessary on most surfaces.

Tips for storage and use

  • Conservation : This homemade cleanser keeps for 2 to 3 weeks at room temperature, protected from light. Shake before each use.
  • Caution: avoid marble and natural stone surfaces, which are sensitive to the acidity of vinegar.
  • Tip: for an even more intense fragrance, you can add 10 to 15 drops of organic lavender essential oil to the mix.

3 other uses for lavandin flowers for a healthy interior

Lavender flowers can be used for more than just cleaning. Here are three other ways to incorporate them into your daily routine, especially for spring cleaning.

Scented sachets in cupboards

Fill small fabric pouches with dried lavandin flowers and place them in your wardrobes, chests of drawers, and drawers. The powerful scent of lavandin delicately perfumes your linens. Remember to press them regularly to release their fragrance, and replace them every 2 to 3 years.

A natural and decorative potpourri

Mix lavandin flowers with dried citrus peel, rosemary or thyme sprigs. Arrange them in a dish or pretty open jar: you’ve got a natural potpourri that perfumes and decorates your home, without any artificial fragrances.

A home air freshener for every room

Prepare a concentrated infusion of lavandin flowers (3 tablespoons for 300 ml of hot water), filter and pour into a spray bottle. Spray into rooms to neutralize unpleasant odors and create a fresh, soothing atmosphere.
