Lavandin has been part of the Provençal landscape for generations. More robust and more productive than fine lavender, it is the king of the home: home fragrance, laundry, household products, body cosmetics, and sachets for wardrobes.
Since 1932, our family has grown lavandin on the Valensole plateau, organic since 2002, and distils it traditionally. Here is how to use it, variety by variety.
Lavender or lavandin: the difference at a glance
Lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia) is a natural hybrid of fine lavender and spike lavender. It produces much more essential oil, with a stronger, slightly camphor-like scent. Fine lavender, gentler, is more for relaxation and sleep.
To learn everything about the plant: lavandin, origin and varieties. And to test yourself: lavender or lavandin—we bet you will get it wrong.
Grosso or super: which lavandin for which use?
Not all lavandin varieties are used in the same way. On the plateau, we mainly grow these two:
| Variety | Scent | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| Lavandin grosso | The strongest and longest-lasting scent of all lavender varieties | The home (laundry, cleaning, home fragrance, insects) and making body cosmetics (soaps, balms, deodorants) |
| Lavandin super | Softer, less camphor-like, close to fine lavender | Muscle massage after exertion and foot baths |
Our organic lavandin essential oil is a grosso. Lavandin super will be available from us soon.

Production of lavandin-based organic household products
Lavandin grosso is the ideal base for simple, healthy, plastic-free household products: all-purpose cleaner, deodorising spray, homemade laundry detergent.
Our step-by-step recipe: natural lavandin cleaner. And to go further: lavandin to purify the home.
Lavandin grosso for making your body cosmetics
Its powerful, long-lasting scent makes grosso a choice ingredient for homemade or artisanal cosmetics: cold-process soaps, balms, deodorants, solid shampoos. The fragrance lasts, even after saponification.
This is what we use in our lavandin solid shampoo and our lavandin balm.
For your own recipes: 1 to 2% essential oil in the preparation, i.e. about 20 to 40 drops per 100 g.
Lavandin super for massage and foot baths
Softer and less camphor-like, lavandin super is the preferred choice for body care:
- Post-exercise massage: 10 drops in 50 ml of vegetable oil, to massage into muscles after sport or a physically demanding day.
- Foot bath: 5 drops mixed with a spoonful of salt, in a bowl of hot water. Ideal at the end of the day.
For relaxation and sleep, choose fine lavender, which is gentler: lavender essential oil and sleep.

When used correctly, no. Like any essential oil, it is highly concentrated: do not swallow it, always dilute it before applying to the skin, and avoid the eyes. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and young children. Perform a patch test in the crook of the elbow before first use.
No, lavandin is not meant to be consumed: its camphor-like scent is too strong. For an infusion, choose fine lavender flowers: our lavender infusion.
Grosso has the strongest and longest-lasting scent: it is made for the home and cosmetics. Super, which is gentler, is preferred for massage and foot baths.
